Our Work

Committed to Supporting Children and Strengthening Communities

WEA supports Baltimore City Partner School students in grades Pre-K through high school, both inside and outside the classroom, with scholarships and educational and developmental opportunities. Students begin ‘learning to learn’ in Pre-K. In the forward movement, during the next five years, Elementary School students ‘learn to grow.’ Pace and focus increase in the critical Middle and High School years as students ‘learn to succeed.

Outcomes drive every element of WEA’s ambition for the children. Scholarships place them in the classroom and physical, cultural, spiritual and social initiatives provide enrichment for a balanced educational experience. Enhancements include new school supplies, state-of-the-art technology, playgrounds, wellness checks by the school nurse, and adjunct curricula for math, literacy and language, summer reading, all of which add to a child’s learning portfolio.

At WEA, we foster student agency by nurturing a sense of ownership in a student’s educational journey. Through personalized goal setting (2nd-12th), encouraging critical thinking, and providing opportunities for active participation, we equip students to shape their own success. WEA recognizes the invaluable role parents play in shaping their child’s educational journey. Our parent conferences provide a dedicated space to discuss and celebrate their child’s progress. By sharing insights, setting goals, and collaboratively addressing challenges, we ensure that each student receives the tailored support they deserve. Together, we pave the way for brighter futures and empowered learning experiences.

The potential of each student is therefore maximized, which fosters the formation of good citizens. Communities are then transformed – a win-win for the future of our students and Baltimore City.

Pre-K

Learning to Learn

Research has shown that providing Pre-K education is a vital investment in a child’s future success. At WEA, we recognized this early on and became the pioneering organization in the area to offer Pre-K scholarships. By beginning education at this crucial stage, children establish a strong foundation for consistent and stable learning throughout their educational journey.

Pre-K education equips young learners with essential disciplines, social skills, and a broad spectrum of permissible actions that lay the groundwork for their future educational endeavors, both within and beyond the classroom. In this safe and secure environment, Pre-K students are encouraged to explore, nurtured to grow, and rewarded for their curiosity. This early experience fosters the formation of friendships and the establishment of a sense of community—skills that empower them to become eager and capable learners.

At WEA, we are dedicated to nurturing the potential of each child through the power of Pre-K education. Join us in setting the stage for a lifetime of achievement and growth by learning to learn!

Elementary

Learning to Grow

Just as Pre-K education lays the foundation for lifelong learning, WEA-supported Elementary School children are on a journey of learning to grow. Their minds and dreams are ignited with boundless wonder, fostering a ‘sky is the limit’ mentality during these formative years.

To ensure their success, WEA provides educators with enhanced curricula and supplementary materials that address challenging subjects for elementary students. Advanced computer devices are also part of our technology support, enriching their learning experiences.

Beyond the classroom, WEA extends its support to encompass comprehensive opportunities for growth. From summer reading materials and camps to outdoor gardening, field trips, and even basketball and sports equipment, we are committed to creating sustainable avenues for learning and exploration. As the saying goes, ‘Cause kids just wanna have fun,’ which is why WEA has proudly funded outdoor playgrounds. These spaces allow students to unleash their boundless energy while still fostering an environment of learning and development.

Middle and High School

Learning to Succeed

Middle school is a transformative phase where students are learning to succeed by cultivating a wider perspective while honing in on their passions. As they contemplate their future paths, questions like ‘What do I aspire to achieve?’ and ‘Which high school is the right fit?’ take center stage. At WEA, we encourage a proactive mindset and we inspire middle schoolers to channel their efforts toward academic growth. This means buckling down, striving for improved grades, and receiving tailored support to enhance test scores. With an eye on their educational journey, we help them broaden their horizons and embrace new possibilities.

Collaborating closely with school Principals, WEA ensures a seamless transition to the next educational level: High School. We offer “push-in” tutoring, particularly in math, often in small group settings, alongside other educational enrichments, like IXL.

Our commitment extends beyond middle school academics. Through dedicated partnerships, we empower students to explore their potential and pursue their passions. Together, we’re cultivating a generation of focused, forward-thinking individuals prepared to excel in high school and beyond. At WEA, we’re not just shaping students; we’re shaping futures.”
